Voters in the Malaysian state of Penang have been going to the polls in a key by-election that is likely to see opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim returned to parliament.
The election is being seen as a test of Anwar's reputation and credibility after he was charged with sodomy. Anwar has rejected the charges as a smear campaign. If Anwar succeeds in entering parliament, it would be the next step in his effort to topple the government of Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi by mid-September. He has pledged to rid the country of race-based politics and revive its ailing economy if voted into office.
