Pakistan has banned the main Taliban militant group behind a wave of suicide attacks in the country.
The interior ministry said the group, Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, was an umbrella group for militants along the Afghan border. The outfit has been blamed for most of the attacks which have killed nearly 1,200 people since July last year. Pakistan banned the group 24 hours after rejecting a Taliban cease-fire offer in Bajur province, where an army offensive has reportedly killed hundreds in recent weeks. However, a spokesman for Tehrik-e-Taliban claimed the ban was meaningless.
