Israel has released almost 200 Palestinian prisoners as a goodwill gesture to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
The release coincides with a visit to the region by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice for talks with Palestinian and Israeli leaders to gauge the progress of peace talks. The peace process has made little visible progress since its formal relaunch last November during the Annapolis conference in the United States. Israelis and Palestinians remain deeply divided on core issues like the status of Jerusalem, the fate of Palestinian refugees, and final borders.
