24.08.2008 - UK Tibet protester to be released

A British woman held in China for three days without charge after a Free Tibet demonstration is to be released and deported, Downing Street has said.

Mandy McKeown, 41, from Bristol, had been expected to be detained for 10 days following the protest in Beijing.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown raised her case when he met Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao on Friday.

Closing ceremony

Mother-of-two Mrs McKeown was arrested while filming the protest near the site of the Beijing Olympics on Thursday.

Two Americans and a German were also detained by the Chinese authorities.

Mrs McKeown has a five-year-old son and a three-year-old daughter.

Mr Brown is in China for the closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympics and the handover of the Games to London for 2012.
